Asia-Pacific

Market growth in APAC is largely driven by factors such as the various investments and reforms to modernize China’s healthcare infrastructure, the digital healthcare scenario in India, the “One Singaporean, one health record” initiative in Singapore, and the implementation of e-health initiatives in Australia.

Digital healthcare scenario in India

The Indian government started the Digital India campaign to ensure that government services are made available to citizens electronically by improving the IT infrastructure and increasing Internet connectivity. It was launched on July 1, 2015. Under the Digital India campaign, the e-health initiative will involve the integration of patients’ EHRs in a “digital locker” that can be maintained over a lifetime. Moreover, the e-health initiative is likely to encourage the use of electronic information among various healthcare providers. The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoH&FW) introduced EHR/EHR standards for India in September 2013, which were further revised in December 2016. These standards provide recommendations relevant to the adoption of EHRs/EHRs and other similar clinical information systems. The adoption of these standards is expected to achieve interoperability. Furthermore, the e-health sector in India has attracted significant funding in recent years. For instance, in January 2017, Practo Technologies Pvt. Ltd., the provider of the Practo Ray practice management software, received USD 55 million in a series D funding. The firm is expected to use this fund for global expansion. The role of HCIT in India vastly differs across its public and private sectors. Many hospitals in the country, specifically public or government hospitals and healthcare organizations, prefer manual processes to IT solutions and avoid the use of IT solutions. Private sector organizations are also focusing on delivering quality services in the healthcare industry. Big organizations such as GE Healthcare (US), Siemens Healthcare GmbH (Germany), Wipro Limited (India), and Dell Inc. (US) have been increasingly experimenting with IT solutions in India’s healthcare industry. According to a UN report, the population of people over 60 years is projected to triple and reach around 300 million by 2050. These changes in demographics will boost the number of healthcare interventions required in general, particularly for lifestyle diseases. To meet such healthcare requirements, the Indian healthcare industry is beginning to adopt the approach of a connected healthcare ecosystem. The successful implementation of this approach requires the adoption of HCIT solutions to begin health information exchange on a large scale and finally move towards insight-driven healthcare that would include solutions such as EHR. This showcases the high potential for the growth of EHR in India.
