Hall-Effect current sensors are noncontact electronic sensors that detect the alteration of magnetic fields by ferromagnetic objects and accordingly change the output voltage of the current sensor.

Hall-Effect current sensors are broadly categorized into two types, namely, open-loop current sensors and closed-loop current sensors. Open-loop sensors consist of a magnetic core through which the current-carrying conductor is passed. The Hall element is suspended within the core gap to measure the amount of flux created in the magnetic core. Closed-loop current sensors consist of the same magnetic core, but the core is wound with a coil. When the primary current is sent through the core, the wound coil generates magnetic flux. This generated flux is opposite to the magnetic flux inside the core, which results in zero magnetic flux. Hence, closed loop sensors are also known as null balance current sensors.
