A release liner is a paper or plastic-based film sheet used to prevent the adhesive from prematurely adhering to the substance/material. It is coated on one or both sides with a release agent that provides a release effect against any sticky material such as an adhesive or mastic. Release liners protect the adhesive from adhering prior to its initial application. Release liners are available in different colors, with or without printing on the back side of the liner. Non-migratory types of materials such as polyacrylates, carbamates, polyolefins, fluorocarbons, and silicones are used in the manufacturing of release liners, as they do not contaminate the surface of released materials. Release liners have major applications in the label industry. Other applications of release liners are pressure-sensitive tapes, graphic arts, hygiene, and medical.
