Carbon fiber tape is a flat material made up of carbon fiber roving. In carbon fiber tape, the alignment of carbon fiber roving can be unidirectional or bidirectional. The tape can be woven or non-woven. It comes in various thicknesses; the UD carbon fiber tape can also be slit into different widths without losing its strength. The unidirectional alignment makes the tape very strong compared to woven fabrics. Carbon fiber tapes are of two types—prepreg tape and dry tape. Prepreg tape is pre-impregnated with resin, especially epoxy resin, to enhance its physical and mechanical properties, whereas dry tape can be adhesive backed or without any adhesive coating. Dry tape weighs one-seventh as much as steel tape for given strength. Carbon fiber tapes provide superior properties such as resistance to abrasion, wear, and chemical; high modulus; high strength; high stiffness; low density; and low creep.
