The definition of biostimulants is unclear, and in many instances, ambiguity exists between biostimulants and biofertilizers. However, few organizations such as the European Biostimulants Industry Council (EBIC) have proposed definitions, which are yet to be considered by the government regulatory bodies such as the European Union (EU) and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). According to the EBIC, “plant biostimulants contain substance(s) and/or micro‐organisms whose function, when applied to plants or the rhizosphere, is to stimulate natural processes to enhance/benefit nutrient uptake, nutrient efficiency, tolerance to abiotic stress, and crop quality.” Though derived from natural sources, the active ingredients used in the formulation range from humic and fulvic acids to amino acid and microbial amendments.
